MQ‑5 LPG/Propane Gas Sensor – Compact, Low‑Power, Industrial‑Grade Detection

The MQ‑5 is a semiconductor gas sensor with a tin dioxide (SnO₂) sensing element that detects a broad spectrum of hydrocarbon gases such as LPG, methane, propane, and natural gas. It delivers a linear, analog voltage output proportional to the gas concentration, making it ideal for straightforward integration with microcontrollers, data loggers, and IoT gateways. The sensor operates at 5 V DC, drawing < 100 µA in standby and < 200 µA during active sensing, and exhibits a response time of a few seconds for LPG concentrations within 200–10 000 ppm.

Designed for low‑profile applications, the MQ‑5 comes in a small 3.5 mm × 1.5 mm metal can, fitted with a resistively heated probe that stabilizes quickly at 200 °C. It tolerates high humidity (≤ 95 % RH) and rugged vibrations, allowing deployment in automotive, industrial safety systems, home gas leak detectors, and environmental monitoring stations.
